This month, we are reading The Day the World Came to Town, 9/11 in Gander, New Foundland by Jim Defede, a moving story of a community that opened its homes to more than 6,000 stranded airline passengers on 9/11/2001.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Journalist Jim Defede calls attention to a sidelight of the events of 9/11 as the town of Gander (pop. 10,000) swells with the influx of 6,500 air travelers when US airspace was shut down and 38 planes were grounded. Through selective interviews, the book describes engaging acts of copious kindness and generosity on the part of local residents and quick thinking initiatives led by the mayor and other local civic leaders. Separate vignettes focus on individual passengers in this heartwarming chronicle of friendship and goodwill.
